Dear friends
Just an update about the documentary I am making about the UK Bellydance scene
We have had so much positive feedback about this and so many people want to be involved, we could not possibly fit you all in to one film but I really want to give everyone a chance to have their say so we have decided that we are going to make a full length documentary then follow that up with a series of shorts to profile various bellydancers/troupes/classes/teachers around the UK.
Miles Copeland has kindly agreed to be interviewed at Raqs B which is Fab and we have also been asked to film at several other big events, we assure those people that our small
Camera crew will be non intrusive and respectful to all involved and we will of course have to ask anyone being filmed to sign consent and release forms.
My aim for this film:
I really want to give the bellydance community a voice, challenge stereotypes created by the media and show the general public bellydance in it's true light, and the way I see it,
which is positive, supportive and so much fun!
It is a shame that so many people still compare bellydancers with strippers and that most parents would never dream of sending their child to belly dance classes but instead send them to ballet lessons which does not necessarily promote positive female body image but teaches them that they must strive for extreme perfection and when they don't fit the standard they are simply told they are not good enough.
Belly dance is accessible for all ages, shapes and sizes of women
from all sorts of backgrounds, and instead of sharing tips on how to stay thin, we support each other and celebrate the female form.
Basically, when people watch the film I want to leave them thinking 'Wow, Belly dance is great!'
