Gig - Nottingham - 3rd June 2006
Fazal Qureshi - Tabla / percussion
Pete Lockett - Percussion / electronics
Amit Chatterjee - Guitar / voice / electronics
These three great musicians have combined for a brand-new percussive collaboration. Multi-percussionist Pete Lockett performed with two of South Asia’s most outstanding and renowned musicians: Fazal Qureshi, son of the late Ustad Allarakha, and Amit Chatterjee, guitarist with the legendary Joe Zawinul and also Trilok Gurtu. This gig was a rich fusion of contemporary and traditional South Asian sounds, global percussive styles and electronics, and bringing together for the first time the unique voices of three extraordinary artists.
The guys had only had two days rehersal and this was their first gig. Wow, what they will be like with some more time together. The interchanges and time chage swere fantastic. Fazal's tabla solo "6 and a Half" ((which also describes the time) was breathtaking.
Fazal Qureshi, the second son of Ustad Allarakha, began his training with his father when he was very young. Fazal launched his professional career at the age of 19 and has performed both as a soloist and as an accompanist in worldwide. Fazal is acclaimed for his eloquence and sensitivity, as well as for his versatility.
I love Pete's use of traditional percussion with electronics. Pete Lockett is one of the most versatile multi-percussionists today and the wide range of artists he’s worked with reflects the diversity of his playing. He has recorded and / or toured with many of the top names including A R Rahman, Zakir Hussain, Nitin Sawhney, Hariharan, Vikku Vinayakram, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, Jeff Beck, Bill Bruford, Texas, Craig Armstrong, the Verve and David Arnold amongst others.
Amit reminded me of John McLaughlin with a twist. Amit Chatterjee is a guitarist, classical singer, and composer who combines his heritage in Hindustani music with many years of playing and studying European, jazz and popular music. He has recorded and performed extensively Joe Zawinul, Carlos Santana, Glen Velez and David Lieberman amongst others.
